WHAT DOES A TYPICAL DAY OF A NEWBORN LOOK LIKE?
You might be excited to welcome your new born baby into your lives.
New born babies mostly eat, sleep, poop or cry. No matter how prepared you are, every baby is different and it will take you some time to get back into a routine.
Here are some activities that a typical new born baby does everyday:-
1- Sleeping
Your baby is going to spend a lot of time sleeping as they can’t differentiate between night and day. They might sleep 14–16 hours a day.
They might wake up just to feed or get a diaper change. You will still need to be alert so you can get a good idea which time they wake up regularly and how long their sleep lasts at a stretch.
It will be a good few months before your newborn starts sleeping longer or falls into a predictable pattern of morning nap, afternoon nap and late night sleep.
2- Eating
Most newborns will get hungry every 2- 3 hours.
If you are breastfeeding them, your baby will feed more often as they can digest breast milk easily. If you are giving baby formula, it will last longer and they will eat less.
When they want to feed, they will generally make sucking motions, put their thumb inside their mouths or start to cry to signal their hunger.
Make sure you burp your baby after each feed so that they don’t feel gassy.
3- Diapers
A newborn baby will poop a lot so keep packets of diapers handy or cloth diapers to change them immediately when they feel any discomfort.
For the first week, their poops will be thick and black because of a substance called meconium inside their intestines. After that, their poop will be yellow in colour.
4- Cuddling and playing
Make some time to cuddle and play with your baby as it will help in their growth and development.
You can give them tummy time while you read them their favourite stories or give them a warm massage. You can also give skin-to-skin contact to help them feel safe around you and recognise your smell.
They will love watching you smile, sing, dance, make funny faces and talk with them.
You can give them rattles to play with that make noises to captivate their attention or chewable toys that they can put in their mouth while playing. Rattles, picture books, musical toys and many more toys for your newborn can be bought from the comfort of your home, when you visit our website lilamigosnest.
5- Crying
Get prepared to see your baby cry a lot!
This is how they communicate with you. When they start crying, check their diaper or see if they feel hungry and want to feed. Take them in your arms if they feel scared and need some comfort.
If your baby is well fed and their diaper is dry and they still continue to cry then try swaddling them to mimic how they felt in your womb. Turn on a white noise machine or play it from your music app. Give them a pacifier for them to suck.
As you spend more time with your newborn, you will slowly start to recognise their cries and know what they want.
Conclusion
The first days with your newborn can make you feel overwhelmed but we promise you welcoming a baby is going to be exciting and fun once you spend time with them and let life take its course.
